Recently, an event in my personal life reminded me once again of the profound healing and wellness that comes from deep, restorative sleep. Let me explain: I have a bad back. A really bad back. I was born with scoliosis which was never treated, and as a result, my back musculature developed in such a way, as to compensate and provide support where my spinal column cannot.
Compound this congenital fact with two ruptured disks at the age of 18, spinal stenosis as I’ve aged, arthritis and degenerative disk disease, and well, you have the perfect storm for chronic, sometimes debilitating pain. I’m also unable to stand for long periods of time without tremendous pain ensuing. This fact caused challenges for me recently when I had to be on my feet nearly 10 hours performing my duties at Chick-Fil-A, causing muscle spasms to develop in my lower back.
I knew I was going to need to see a massage therapist or my pain would only escalate. Unfortunately, I was unable to, and as I anticipated, the spasms and ergo the pain, escalated to such a state, I was forced to take an entire week off from work.
It took days of rest (nearly 10 to be exact), stretching, chiropractic adjustments and TIENS therapy, to be able to stand straight and walk again. I was also sleeping 10 to 12 hours per day, every day, and the benefits were measurable. In fact, I believe that the sleep did more to bring about my healing and restoration than the chiropractic adjustments – though I won’t discount the value of that.
In fact, the sleep was so healing, I realized just how sleep deprived I have been, and how much it has affected how I feel on a daily basis.
It was also a reminder of why women going through perimenopause have such a difficult time with the transition. The crazy, whacky periods with clots and excessive blood loss is utterly draining.
The hot flashes and night sweats can make you absolutely miserable, and don’t get me started on the mood swings, weight gain, vaginal dryness, loss of libido and vaginal atrophy! But, when you are also sleep deprived, as most women in perimenopause are, all of these symptoms seem so much worse. Nay, they are so much worse.
There is a reason that sleep deprivation is used as a form of torture! Without enough sleep, we not only break down mentally, but we also breakdown physically. And my back episode brought home to me that that sleep, and nothing else but sleep, is THE most important thing that women need to manage and cope with perimenopause symptoms.
But, alas, what if you can’t get any sleep? And such is perimenopause, when insomnia is one of the biggest complaints. You know you need the sleep. You WANT the sleep. But, you just can’t get it. Sound familiar? You bet it does!
Premium Health Labs Sleep Spray with CBD
Many of you have asked for recommendations from me on how to treat insomnia in perimenopause. I have recommended everything from estrogen and progesterone, to melatonin and even magnesium. Premium Health Labs’ Sleep Spray with CBD is also something I would like to recommend to you. Particularly if you’re not too keen on using hormone therapy.
I recently received a sample bottle of the spray and was able to use it with good results. Very good results actually. I slept soundly and didn’t wake up once during the night. Which, as so many of you suffering through perimenopause know, is a freaking miracle in itself. Is it not???
Unfortunately, and much to my chagrin, I wasn’t able to use the product for a second night because, well, my new Jack Russell puppy, decided to chew the bottle to smithereens and soak the spray right into my carpet!
Needless to say, I was upset. But, what can you do? He’s a puppy. I’m just glad that I was able to use it at least once, so I could vouch for its effectiveness. And effective it is.
Sleep Spray with CBD has Natural Ingredients
The active ingredients in Sleep Spray are CBD, and a proprietary blend of GABA and Valerian Root. GABA as many of you probably know (because The Perimenopause Blog readers are the most well read folks around!) is a neurotransmitter produced in the brain, which is also a powerful sleep-aid which keeps us in a deeper sleep, uninterrupted for longer periods of time.
GABA also effectively treats anxiety and depression, both of which women in perimenopause struggle with, and which also interferes with our natural sleep rhythms. Valerian root is a naturally occurring herb which has been used for centuries to treat anxiety and sleep issues as well.
And the CBD? Well, hold onto your hat, ladies. Because when I read that the Sleep Spray had CBD in it, also known as “cannabis” I went into a bit of a tailspin. As a former pot smoker in my younger hippy days of the 60s and 70s, I was reticent, to say the least, to use the spray, out of concern I might find myself stoned out of my mind.
But, it turned out to be an unwarranted concern. CBD, or Cannabidiol, is in fact is a cannabis compound, but it does not make people feel “stoned” as I originally feared.
In fact, there has been significant scientific and medical research on CBD, which has shown it to be a safe and effective treatment not only for insomnia, but also for conditions of inflammation such as arthritis and MS, chronic pain, depression, and it even has anti-cancer properties. So, if like me, it raised a bit of alarm for you, it’s okay. It won’t turn you into a pothead stoner. It will however, help you sleep. And it doesn’t leave you feeling groggy or hungover.
Premium Health Labs has an excellent article on their blog which addresses the effectiveness of CBD in treating insomnia, which is very informative and can answer any potential questions you might have that I haven’t answered. I was pleasantly surprised at how effective the Sleep Spray is. And I think you will be too. Especially if you do not want to use hormones and you haven’t found anything yet which has helped you get those sheep over that fence. It’s reasonably priced too!
You can purchase the Sleep Spray with CBD here, and if you are interested in doing a little more research before you buy, you can also get more questions answered here, along with a few reviews as well.
