Perimenopause is the difficult time when hormones start to decline, but they are not quite low enough for a woman to be considered a candidate for hormone replacement therapy in traditional medicine.

Progesterone is one of the hormones that tend to drop off earlier in a woman’s life.  One of the most common symptoms I see with progesterone deficiency is insomnia, specifically waking up between the hours of 2 and 3 a.m.

Night sweats, mood swings, heavy, painful periods, anxiety, and weight gain are a few other symptoms which are common with progesterone deficiency.

Progesterone therapy can help perimenopausal women get a better night’s sleep, especially when the progesterone is administered orally.  Progesterone can also help calm the mood and help alleviate depression and anxiety.  Additionally, progesterone replacement can help balance estrogen production.

If you have too much estrogen  and not enough progesterone, this can lead to a condition known as estrogen dominance.  A common symptom of estrogen dominance in perimenopausal women is heavy and painful periods.

Progesterone replacement therapy can help regulate periods and make them less heavy and painful. The key is having a balance between the two.  Estrogen dominance also leads to weight gain. So by balancing progesterone levels, women can improve their metabolism and maintain a healthier weight.

Like menopause, the only way to know for sure if the symptoms you’re experiencing are related to perimenopause, is to have your hormone levels tested and evaluated by a hormones specialist. Based on your test results, your doctor can then create a customized treatment plan to help you regain hormonal balance and start feeling like yourself again.
