Estrogen Replacement Therapy in Menopause

Post image for Estrogen Replacement Therapy in Menopause

When I first began blogging and writing about perimenopause and menopause issues, I was squarely in the “anti-hormone” camp.  Much of this was due to the fact that I began entering perimenopause in the late 1990s and the early 2000s, just as the Women’s Health Initiative Study was being released.

I was already abhorrent toward any type of drugs or substances of any kind being put into my body, and after the hoopla associated with the Women’s Health Initiative, I sure wasn’t about to put hormones in my body for my perimenopause symptoms.

It is a decision that I have come to regret. Primarily because over the past nearly 10 years that I’ve been writing about women’s health issues, I’ve learned a lot about estrogen hormone replacement therapy, and the benefits of estrogen therapy in general. Today, I currently use both bioidentical estrogen and bioidentical progesterone, to manage what are now my menopause symptoms.

I can’t help but think had I been more educated and less caught up in misinformation and hysteria, I might have saved myself a lot of stress.  But, alas, we live and learn don’t we?

Many Women are Giving Estrogen Therapy a Second Look

Estrogen hormone replacement therapy is now less scary than it was in 2002, and more women like myself are willing to take a second look at it.  As I’ve said, I honestly think it is beneficial for a lot of reasons.  I personally use estrogen to help with vaginal dryness, brain fog, short-term memory issues, and to help with insomnia.

I honestly did not realize for many years how helpful it was with these symptoms. Of course, for me, these symptoms didn’t really manifest themselves to any significant degree until I reached actual menopause.  Once we reach menopause (12 consecutive months without a menstrual cycle), our estrogen production in our body has decreased significantly. Hence, vaginal dryness, brain fog, short-term memory issues, and oh, the insomnia!

So where I used to think estrogen was the enemy during perimenopause and menopause, I’ve since come full circle, and realize now, that it is highly beneficial for many women.  However, I also strongly believe that you must do your research, and weigh carefully the benefits of estrogen hormone replacement therapy against any potential risks as well.

Clearly, not everyone can safely use estrogen. And I certainly don’t recklessly offer that kind of advice here at The Perimenopause Blog. Do your research, ladies!

That said, if you are interested in checking out estrogen hormone replacement therapy for yourself, National HRT is a site you can check out. But not just for estrogen therapy.  National HRT also offers progesterone therapy, and even testosterone therapy as well.

pellet

As an aside: I’ve also tried testosterone pellets and found them to be helpful. I didn’t stick with them, however, because I also found the side effects (now don’t laugh…..but all I could think about was sex!) not to my liking.  I know some women (and certainly some men, I’m sure) would find that to be a very pleasant side effect.  But, for me, it was more of a distraction.

If you are considering estrogen hormone replacement therapy to help manage your own symptoms of perimenopause and menopause, which is also referred to as ERT by the way, then ERT at National HRT might be an excellent option for you.

National HRT offers free consultations so that you can discuss your concerns and questions with trained personnel and physicians.  You can also receive information on where you can find physicians to help you with the different therapies they offer.  And if you’re anything like me and prefer online ordering you’re in luck.  National HRT also allows you to order some of their products online as well!

If any of you decide to try ERT National HRT, as always, I would love to hear your experience and opinions!

Thanks to the recent outbreak of fungal meningitis in the United States, which is now responsible for 25 deaths across the country, compounding pharmacies are now in the cross-hairs of federal regulators, and questions are being raised about their safety. The New England Compounding Center, (NECC), located in Massachusetts, shipped thousands of vials of a […]

So Exactly “WHAT” are Bioidentical Hormones?

Thumbnail image for So Exactly “WHAT” are Bioidentical Hormones?

I’m going to come clean and tell you that until the last couple of years, I really didn’t understand the difference between bioidentical hormones and what we call synthetic hormones. I also didn’t know that bioidentical hormones have actually been around for a very long time – like, nearly 100 years. Surprised?  I was too. […]

Prometrium: An Oral FDA Approved Bioidentical Progesterone

Thumbnail image for Prometrium: An Oral FDA Approved Bioidentical Progesterone

It is no secret that I personally prefer bioidentical hormones for the treatment of symptoms of perimenopause as opposed to synthetic hormones and drugs. In fact, I sincerely believe that most women prefer natural, healthier, and less intrusive treatments as well. However, most bioidentical hormones are not FDA approved, and therefore, are not covered by most health insurance plans. Unfortunately, this […]

Hormone Replacement Therapy isn’t as Scary as You Think

Thumbnail image for Hormone Replacement Therapy isn’t as Scary as You Think

In 2002, the Women’s Health Initiative study sent the medical professionals prescribing hormone replacement therapy to their patients into a bonafide tail spin. Terrified of putting women at risk for coronary heart disease, stroke or breast cancer, physicians abandoned HRT all together, advising their patients to do the same. Few would argue the value of the study. […]

What are the Risks & Side Effects of Prometrium?

Thumbnail image for What are the Risks & Side Effects of Prometrium?

Prior to my taking Prometrium, an FDA approved, bioidentical, oral progesterone, I used bioidentical progesterone in a cream form, which I purchased from compounding pharmacies. I was careful to only purchase the highest grade and quality I could find (read: expensive), and used it happily for several years with no negative side-effects. Last year, on the […]

It’s always good when members of the medical community offer kudos. I just don’t […]

Estrogen Replacement Therapy: Yes or No?

Thumbnail image for Estrogen Replacement Therapy: Yes or No?

Let’s face it.  The average women does not understand the role of estrogen during perimenopause.  But, when the average OB/GYN doesn’t seem to understand it very well either, is it any surprise then that women looking for help for their symptoms of perimenopause are clueless? It also doesn’t help that there is a big, wide […]

Are Bio-identical Hormones & Synthetic Hormones the Same?

Undoubtedly, if you have done any reading on the topic of bio-identical hormones whatsoever, you’ve learned that like synthetic hormones, they are produced in a lab. Because of this, many physicians will tell you that synthetic hormones and bio-identical hormones are exactly the same. But, the honest-to-God’s truth is, they are not.  The difference lies […]

When the Women’s Health Initiative study came to a screeching halt in 2002 the fear of God rained down on physicians and their patients. Terrified of putting women at risk for heart disease, breast cancer or stroke, many physicians stopped prescribing hormone replacement therapy for menopause, advising their patients to avoid hormones all together. In 1984, the U.S. Justice Department dismantled one of those most successful telephone companies in U.S. history, American Bell Telephone Company. From 1877 to 1984, Ma Bell (as she became affectionately known) ruled, though mostly by way of a monopoly, hence, the dismantling. To hear my mother tell it, the government destroyed a “perfectly good […]
